Origins of "Crazy", possibly?

Jump to the fine Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good to download the original sample for the Gnarls Barkley song 'Crazy'.

Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good: The Evolution of "Crazy": "Origin: You all have heard Gnarles Barkley's 'Crazy' (it's pretty much impossible to get away from at this point), but have you heard 'Nel Cimitero Di Tucson', which is essentially a raw instrumental form of Crazy. Unless you check alot of random world-music blogs (like me) you probably haven't. It seems that Gnarles Barkley heavily sampled the song, which comes from the soundtrack of the film, Preparati la bara! (IMDB link here).

It's very interesting to listen to the original version and be able to hear the progression to it's current chart-topping form, most noticeably the trumpets from the original were replaced with strings for Gnarles Barkley's version, but the bass line stays the same nearly the whole song though.

Barsuk Inks British Songwriter Jim Noir

Eanie Meany by Jim Noir.

If you've watched *any* world cup action, you've seen the adidas +10 commercials. In the one where they actually play, this song is the soundtrack.

Barsuk Inks British Songwriter Jim Noir: "Barsuk Inks British Songwriter Jim Noir

Michael Paoletta, N.Y.
British newcomer Jim Noir is a huge soccer fan. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup June 9-July 9 in Germany, he plans to attend one of the England games. Already, though, his music is associated with the World Cup, thanks to Adidas.

Noir's 'Eanie Meany' is featured in Adidas' global Impossible Team ad campaign for the World Cup. In the star-studded campaign, two kids pick their dream soccer team. David Beckham, Michael Ballack, Kaka, Raul, Michel Platini and other soccer greats quickly make their presence known."

bedroom walls

I think I'm going to be listening to these guys a lot this summer. As long as it gets me out of the house and away from the sleeping pills, we'll all be better off for it.

Download NPR performance of The Sun Comes In Circles here.

Just IM'd with my friend Anne about this song. Here's the description: mellow hazy sunshine bored dreamy sunlight with a smidgeon of sundaymorningsex.

bedroom walls: "WHAT IS ROMANTICORE?
Romanticore is the term we coined to describe the kind of music we make. Some elements include: staring at the ceiling; the Santa Ana winds; guilty flashbacks; sedatives; stale cake for breakfast (and lunch); dancing alone in your bedroom to 'Love Plus One'; minimalist posturing undercut by epic gestures; knowing your ex-girlfriend is happier now; sighing too loudly and too often; thinking VELVET GOLDMINE was brilliant despite your better judgement; existentialism (ages 17-22); losing touch with your family; drinking peppermint schnapps because it's all that's left in the house; dandyism (ages 27-33); first kisses; the last paragraph of THE GREAT GATSBY; succumbing to bad habits; losing friends; finding old love letters in a book you borrowed from your new boyfriend; last kisses; Momus' cover of Jacques Brel's 'Ne Me Quitte Pas';getting too old to wear your platform shoes; sleeping far too much; the 'Oh no, love - you're not alone!' part of 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide'; driving around in circles; trying to cry/trying not to cry; etcetera ad infinitum..."

Crying in my office now.

When I went home for my Dad's 65th birthday, I realized how old he's getting. And that it might be only a few more years I'll have him.

Links fixed

Links to 'Emma Blowgun's last stand' and 'It feels so good' have been fixed on the Summer CD.

Btw, visit your friendly neighborhood iTunes store and buy a few other tracks from these artists.

Better yet, go to a show. Bands make more money touring.

no faith

Ugh. Having a June Gloom weekend even though there's no June Gloom. Not feeling very good. Both Kristin's bbq and the soul brunch just sound like horrible places filled with great people who expect you to be sunny and happy.

But I've little after a walk on the beach, I've renewed faith right now, though the Boy Least Likely To do have quite a lot of George Michael's classic.

Ah crap was going to add YouTube of Dana Carvey as George Michael (Look at my bum! It's a perfect sphere! Lookatit!) but it's not there.

www.myspace.com/theboyleastlikelytouk: "
above all, The Boy Least Likely To understand that all the best pop moments are about love, loss and distance. they make disco music with a country heart. sublime pop moments tinged with an English folk eccentricity. sad songs that can't help but make you smile. the album is available in all record shops in the uk now. and in america it is available in all the best independent record shops now and on iTunes usa. to find the nearest shop to you in the usa just go to www.thinkindie.com."

Finally, I've gotten off of my lazy wino ass and put together a mix for the summer sun. It's a blend of old and new with a surprising world music feel.

Slave To The Details New Wave

From fellow mp3 blogger Slave to the Details, new tracks from Nouvelle Vague. Slave To The Details New Wave: "I’ve always thought Nouvelle Vague was the perfect band to listen to on hot summer days. How convenient that Bande part, their new album, is being released when a heat wave is spreading all over the country.

Nouvelle Vague is the fruit of the collaboration between French producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux. The band has a very simple concept: making very mellow and unexpected covers of classic new wave hits.

While their previous album had a bossa nova-ish kind of vibe, Bande part, has many more influences.

Musically [we saw the album] moving between Jamaica, the cradle of mento music which became ska/rocksteady then reggae, to the calypso isle of Trinidad via Cuban salsa, Haitian voodoo, and eventually back to our beloved Brazilian coast

Featured on this post are Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart featured on the band’s first album, Echo & The Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon, Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead and Lords Of The New Church’s Dance With Me… oh boy, I can’t choose! There are too many good songs."
Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata

Having an evil mood day.
Miriam isn't even making me feel better.
Trying to post a summer mix later today.

The Boy Least Likely To - Faith

From one of my faves. Peep their track 'Just be gentle with me'.

Pitchfork: Track Reviews: "The Boy Least Likely To: 'Faith'
genre: indie pop

Stream here

'The Boy Least Likely To Cover George Michael' makes a great joke headline, but the actual event works pretty well, too. The duo attacks Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou's original with banjo, handclaps, acoustic guitar, xylophone, toys, and two-part harmonies-- and comes out smelling of roses. Removed from Michael's ripped jeans, aviator sunglasses, slicked hair, gigantic cross earring, and Homer Simpson stubble (check YouTube if you don't know what I'm talking about), the song loses some of its lascivious qualities and becomes sort of sweet. 'Well I guess it would be nice/ If I could touch your body,' scandalous come-on for Georgie, is for these gentle lads but a shy bit of pining."

Camera Obscura - Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken

Just noticed it's been a month+ since I've posted a real mp3. More to come this afternoon whilst I fight off LA's June Gloom.

This song should help.

Fatboy Slim

New video for Fatboy Slim's new song 'That Old Pair of Jeans'. Trying for a little of that Spike Jonze 'Praise You' vibe, but with only a little ambivalence about its irony.

The song's alright. Kinda doesn't go enough different directions for me. Or perhaps it just doesn't go in one direction forcefully enough for me.
