songs:illinois: Last Town Chorus covers "Modern Love" and Eleventh Dream Day tackles Joy Division's "Isolation"
Really fucking cool stuff. Jump there and download.
If I could play one instrument it would be pedal steel.
songs:illinois: Last Town Chorus covers "Modern Love" and Eleventh Dream Day tackles Joy Division's "Isolation": "The Last Town Chorus is basically Megan Hickey of Brooklyn. She plays the lap steel and sings in a angelic voice. Her new record, Wire Waltz, is due out in September on Loose Records and will feature this cover/re-imagining of Bowie's classic 'Modern Love' (featured in Grey's Anatomy)."

AoME :: 700 Hobo Names
Not strictly music, but it does have an mp3 you should download, Jonathan Ridgman, he of Daily Show and Mac ads fame, has composed a list of 700 hobo names, and then helpfully set that list to music.
It's kinda like Garrison Keilor, except funny and not cloying and repetitive.

summer hodgepodge - unofficial mixtape
Addendum: forgot to add the excellent 'Lived in Bars' by Cat Power, so I added that below. And then I also found this cool Islands song - jogging something or other.
This mix will now officially be longer than will fit on a regular CD-R. Such is life.
It's my birthday, and I'll put together an incoherent mix cd of random themeless songs if I want to.
Note: No track order on this one. It's random and chaotic. There is no wrong here.
Operative quote: We want to be free! We want to be free to do what we want to do! And we wanna get loadeed and we wanna have a good time. We're going to have a good time. We're going to have a party.
The Sun Does Rise - Jah Wobble f. Dolores O'Riordan/
Eanie Meany - Jim Noir
That Teenage Feeling - Neko Case
The Sun Comes In Circles - Brice Fricelli
Hush Boy (Les Visiteurs Remix) - Basement Jaxx
Ghostland gets Bossy - Car Stereo (Wars)
Made Up Love Song #43 - Guillemots
So Far We Are - French Kicks
We are Your Friends (remix) - Justice vs. Simian
Let's Dance - The Futureheads
Modern Girl - Camera Obscura
Spoon Me - Ohm
Young Folks - Peter Bjorn And John
He Knows The Sun - Legends
Where There's a Will There's a Whalebone - Islands
Gone (live) - Kanye West
Dream - Bardi
Strings - Asobi Seksu
Something Good - Legends
Hey Hey La La - The Vells
Loaded - Primal Scream
ADDED 7/25
Jogging - Islands
Lived in Bars - Cat Power especially for the sudden change in tempo and memphis horns towards the end of the song. Well, yes, I too have lived in bars and danced on tables, Chan.

miguel mix cd again - Google Search
Think tonight is going to be a play poker on the pc, upload and blog a new mix cd night.
Although this is going to be more of a stopgap listen to new music mix, as opposed to something, say, coherent and sequenced.
It's all good though, right?

Who blogs? And why? By Jack Shafer
Over 30. Sorta use a pseudonym. Creative self-expression and document personal experience? Check and not so much. Mostly people I know, with some randoms and other bloggers i've never personally met. Do want to change people's minds, or at least expand their musical minds. Never been published in any music journo sorta way.
Who blogs? And why? By Jack Shafer: "Who Are All These Bloggers?
And what do they want?
By Jack Shafer
Updated Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at 6:19 PM ET
When I hear the word 'bloggers,' I tend to think of the A-listers. But the top 100 are not the quarry of the Pew Internet & American Life Project telephone survey of bloggers, published today. They're stalking the larger universe of 12 million adult Americans who blog.
Who are all those bloggers? Why do they blog?
The Pew report, written briskly and ably by Amanda Lenhart and Susannah Fox, delivers an array of provocative findings about bloggers. The most immediately startling for me was the repetition of the phrases 'about half ' or 'nearly half' to describe various blogger attributes. About half of all American bloggers are men, says Pew. About half are under the age of 30. About half use a pseudonym. About half say creative self-expression or documenting personal experiences is a major reason for blogging. About half think their audience is folks they already know. Half say changing people's minds is not a major reason behind their blog, and about half had never published before starting their blog. (The margin of error for the telephone survey was plus or minus 7 percentage points.)"

stereogum: Bare's Eleven
If any of you have some 2002-3 era mix cd's from me, you might have "Flat Chested Girl from Maynardville" or "Your Adorable Beast" from Bobby Bare, Jr. Kinda catchy ragged voiced quirky songs.
Looking forward to his new one.
stereogum: Bare's Eleven: "Bare's Eleven
On March 26th, alt-country singer/songwriter Bobby Bare Jr. recorded his new album The Longest Meow in 11 hours.
The core band of Bobby, Carl and Patrick from My Morning Jacket, and co-producer Brad Jones was joined by Carey Kotsionis, Mike Grimes, Corey Younts, Jim James (MMJ), Doni Schroader (Trail Of Dead), Deanna Varagona (Lambchop), and Ben Martin (Clem Snide). That's 11 musicians.
The album has 11 songs.
We're not sure about the gimmick. But we love MMJ.
Bare tells Billboard:
'Originally, I wanted to do the whole album in an hour. When I do it really short like this, I get to listen to my own record and really love it, because I haven't really heard that much.'
Here's a preview:
Bobby Bare Jr. - 'Snuggling World Championships' (MP3)
Nice title. Don't worry, it's not cuddlecore. But it is as close as you're gonna get to a MMJ studio record this year.
The Longest Meow hits stores 9/26. It's so good they couldn't wait until 11/11."

BADGERS JUMP AROUND - Google Video
In between the 3rd & 4th quarters of their home football games, the entire Wisconsin Badgers student section jumps up and down to well, jump around.
Fantastic display of insanity. Looks like fun dunnit?
NOTE: High school students, please do not attempt on your school's bleachers.

Amazon.com: Take Me to God: Music: Jah Wobble
Download "The Sun Does Rise" by Jah Wobble f. Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries) here.
A beautiful cross of African guitars, Celtic wailing and Jah's insane bass playing. Still somehow strangely accessible.
I'd put this one next to Fools' Gold in my Caravanseri Road Trip Mix. If I ever took such a trip.

Twelve vocalists, including Baaba Maal, Gavin Friday, and Chaka Demus & Pliers guest on this globehopping dance/pop confection masterminded by PIL's original bassist. The musical time-zone jumps are frequent and rather facile, but there are plenty of intriguing moments here--particularly when Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries) sets her Celtic wail against mbaqanga guitars on the first single, 'The Sun Does Rise,' and Wobble grows ecstatic on 'I Love Everybody.' --Jeff Bateman "

Sarah McLachlan - Possession - Mirrorball live - 1999
Cover: the story goes that she wrote this from the perspective of a warped fan.
Ironically, the stalker sued her for copyright infringement. For my money, she did indeed copy her stalkers words.
I'm not sure who I'd want to cover this song, but I'd most def like to see it soundtracking an old school episode of Miami Vice.
So, let's say Bon Jovi or Willie Nelson.

Modest Mouse - Ocean Breathes Salty (Live)
Back when The Crush crushed me, and my back debilitated my fire dancing, 'The Ocean Breathes Salty' was my 'thoughts of despair' soundtrack song.
Key lyric: "You wasted life why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?"
But I had a really hard time in that transitional summer/spring. One day, I broke down while at my chiropractor/acunpuncturere/massuse, with needles in my back and no way to move. And the therapist said she'd be back in 15 minutes and that was about 3 minutes ago.
No one ever told me what to do, so i just kinda sobbed and let snot drip down my nose uncomfortably where it kinda pooled on a stool that somehow was half positioned beneath me.
Luckily, I made it through that. I think the distraction of moving made a big difference. And in a weird way, having the rejection of The Crush helped, as well.
Two summers previous, I'd gone to the coast on my 30th birthday and swum out as far as was safe, and then thrown white roses into the ocean for my birthmother. The thought being that any wave that touches my shore would touch her shore as well.

NPR : Brice Frillici: 'The Sun Comes In Circles'
I've been wooly missled! (copyright 2000, monica taylor/brent mau). the bedroom walls do not sing the Sun Comes In Circles.
Instead, it's somebody named Brice Frillici.
He rocks.
Off to go watch Dick Dale on the Santa Monica Pier.

Brice Frillici
Brice Frillici's latest CD is The Sun Comes in Circles.
Open Mic, June 15, 2006 Brice Frillici originally comes from Northern Wisconsin where he bought a guitar and started multi-tracking, using two boom boxes in high school. After a four-track, college, and moving to the Mission District in San Francisco, Frillici bought a Macintosh and started recording digitally. Laziness mixed with apathy in a dirty household to spark a surprisingly massive musical inspiration.
The Sun Comes In Circles is Fricilli's most accessible and professionally-produced album. It's about girls, Mr. Pibb, bars, beer, parties with live chickens, hangovers, losers, summertime, suicide, stabbing, gangsters, the Mission district, getting laid off, snow cones, and 'other nifty things.'
The album is full of vocal arrangements, haunting melodies and pop sensibilities a la Ween, Magnetic Fields, Flaming Lips, Beach Boys, Camper Van Beethoven, and a drunken Steve Vai mixed with early Prince."

Popsheep: Acronym Rock
Really dig this track available over at Popsheep. It's really worth downloading. Go forth!
Btw, what is it with great Swedish music lately? Must investigate on-site...
Popsheep: Acronym Rock: "
OHM - Spoon Me
I don't usually quote from press releases, but I think that it's appropriate in this case: 'Unknown to the outside world, OHM has kept their music in secret dark places. They have never sent a demo to a record company, only played live once and carefully packed their recordings and put them were no one can find them. Mostly in dark, closed train tunnels deep under Stockholm.' Now, I don't know what kind of abandoned train tunnels and secret dark places they have in Sweden, but they must not be anything like what we have in Canada. Although it is kind of refreshing to picture subterranean dwellers and goth kids bouncing about to infectious pop-music in the in deepest, darkest corners of the Swedish landscape. Who knows, maybe the Scandinavian variant of social democracy has been even more successful than I'd imagined."
